Don’t be deterred! It just requires a minute or two every half hour, so really it is just about being present. Sourdough is such a metaphor. Anyway, you are going to do your ‘turns’ every thirty minutes for four hours. ‘Turns’ meaning reaching under your dough blob (still in your bowl) and folding the bottom up over, and in. You end up making a little package. From a lofty, pedagogical perspective, we were bored with the assembly line approach to learning in traditional school. I don't fault the schools and I have enormous regard for teachers; trying to make lemonade out of lemons while having to buy the sugar themselves! There is just no other way to manage a room full of twenty-five ten year-olds; there has to assigned seats, hand raising, and designated play time. Our goal is to teach our boys HOW to learn and use their resources. This world is changing so fast, there is no way that we can anticipate the work force they will enter; the jobs they will do. The best we can do for them is teach them to adapt, and that is not what the schools were set up to do. In our home/school we talk a lot about taking risks, setting goals, failing (see: sailing), and character. We also get to focus on more 'life skills'; cooking, cleaning, nutrition, money management, and the trades. We looked everywhere between Whitefish and Bellingham, being familiar and comfortable with those markets. We ultimately stumbled (again!) on a sweet and meticulously cared for home on five acres in a quiet pocket of Bellingham. That simply meant saying ‘No’ to many purchases we would have otherwise made. Cruising around a cute little downtown and found a beautiful dress? Sorry, it doesn’t fit in the clothing bin. Also, who am I kidding, this wasn’t exactly a sundress lifestyle! The boys are begging for souvenirs from some gift shop? If it didn’t fit in their bunk, the answer was no.
